Fencing has really gone downhill. I miss the old fencing when it was actually fencing.

No need to defend olympic fencing. After all, neither HEMA nor OF are realistic: we do not fight with swords anymore. They are a historical relic, and you can chose to pick any rules that make you happy or your sport more popular. Discussions of realism, however, are absolutely crucial for hand to hand combat and combat with firearms (and perhaps with knives).

I think foil and epee fencers have still the skill for a duel. But they need the mindset, that their weapon is still a pointy blade, and deflecting/ parry opponents blade is important. Then a traditional handle/ grip. But using fencing for selfdefence needs different training.

Just shows how funny and unrealistic that kind of fight is. :D That was my main issue with olympic fencing in general. I love the sport but no offense... 95%of those "offensive manouvers" would do no real harm to true opponent.
